Welcome and thank you for visiting GFWC Acworth Carrie Dyer Woman’s Club. We are a member driven non-profit volunteer service organization made up of women of all ages who share a very simple common goal to serve and volunteer within our community.
Our Club was founded in 1898 when a young woman named Caroline or “Carrie” Dyer started, with six friends, a literary study group, named in honor of the Greek muse of poetry, the Calliopian Club. They met at Carrie’s home. Two years later in 1900 Carrie died and in her honor the Club name was changed to the Carrie Dyer Reading Club. The group sponsored traveling art collections, speakers, and amateur concerts & plays. In 1908, the members voted to become one of the first clubs in the state to join the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the name of the club was changed from “Reading Club” to the Carrie Dyer Woman’s Club.
Later, the club was named The Carrie Dyer Woman’s Club. The Club purchased a small white house located on Dallas Street in 1910 and used the building as a clubhouse. It also served as a community center, meeting place for Girl Scouts, and housed the volunteer library. Club ladies ran, in the basement of their clubhouse, the Acworth community library, without public funds, for more than 40 years until Acworth joined the Cobb Marietta Public Library system in 1963. They continued to support the library even after the county government took it over.
The Club joined the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1908, under the name Carrie Dyer Woman’s Club. Still active, the club holds the distinction of being the second-oldest women’s club in Georgia.
In 1910, the group purchased a c. 1850 house in downtown Acworth for use as a clubhouse. The house was used to host lectures, special events, and dances, and also served as a meeting place for local organizations such as the Girl Scouts and the American Red Cross. …and for 40 years it was the community library.
Today, the house is a significant historic landmark in Acworth history. It was sold to a private owner in 2018.
The Carrie Dyer Woman’s Club continues to carry on the legacy of living the volunteer spirit.
Since those early days, the Club has remained dedicated to community improvement. As with many similar organizations, our membership has declined in recent years due to the increasing demands on women’s time. But we are not giving up. We are committed to rebuilding our club to reengage with our community for the greater good. In a fast-paced digital world where many are driven by technology and virtual connections, we believe it’s more important than ever to bring back the human spirit—real, face-to-face connection, compassion, and community service. Volunteering reminds us that kindness still matters, that lending a helping hand can change lives, and that together, we can create a stronger, more caring world.
Will you help us? We are actively looking for new members who are ready to make a difference. Please consider joining our international organization and network of women who are committed to service, friendship, and strengthening their communities. Whether you’re a retiree eager to keep learning, a young professional building your resume, or a parent looking for meaningful ways to involve your family—there’s a place for you here. You’ll make new friends, learn valuable skills, and have fun along the way. Together, we can build a brighter future and bring back the spirit of service that connects us all. Join us and be part of something meaningful.
